What to Expect from Your Puppy or Kittens First Exam

What to Expect from Your Puppy or Kittens First Exam

There is rarely anything more exciting than bringing home a new puppy or kitten. However, it may not be apparent that your new furry friend is sick or carries parasites. Puppies and kittens must be checked thoroughly by a veterinarian within 48 hours of arriving in their new homes. Dr. Galdjian and our team at Granada Veterinary Clinic in Mission Hills would like to share what you can expect for your furry friend’s first exam.

Hands-on Exam

Our veterinarian in Mission Hills will need to look, feel, and listen to your puppy or kitten to make sure everything is functioning properly. This will include looking at the fur, in the eyes, ears, and mouth, and palpitating the abdomen. The heart and lungs will be monitored as well.

Blood Work

It is good to have your puppy or kitten’s blood drawn and tested for various illnesses and heartworms. The sooner an illness is detected, the sooner your puppy or kitten can receive the proper treatment.

Stool Sample

Puppies and kittens tend to carry worms. Since they have such small bodies, they can get sick very quickly from just a few worms. This is why you should bring your pet’s most recent stool sample with you to the first visit.

Bring Paperwork and A List of Questions

If you got your puppy or kitten from a breeder or shelter, they usually provide paperwork about the health of your pet or if any vaccinations have been given. Let our veterinarian see this paperwork. You are also bound to have a few questions about puppy and kitten care. Bring your list of questions with you to our veterinary clinic.

Setting Up a Vaccination Schedule

Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccinations to be protected. Some vaccines require more than one dose in a certain amount of time to be effective. The time to schedule your new pet’s vaccinations is now.
