Microchipping

Are you thinking about getting your pet microchipped? Our veterinary team at Granada Veterinary Clinic in Mission Hills, CA, would love to help. Below are some frequently asked questions about microchipping to give you more information.

What Is Microchipping?

Microchipping is the procedure done to place a microchip, a tiny identification device inside an animal. This is a popular procedure that many pet owners have done. The microchip, which is as small as a grain of rice, has a unique serial number attached to it. The number on the microchip can be looked up through an online registry, which includes information, such as your name, address, phone number, and email address, all which can be used to contact you if your pet happens to be lost.

Why Should I Get My Pet Microchipped?

A microchip can give pet owners peace of mind if they are afraid of losing their pet or if they think their cat or dog will run away. It is much easier to reunite a pet with its owner when it is microchipped than if it is not microchipped.

What Is the Procedure Like?

The procedure is very minor and your cat or dog can go home with you on the same day of the microchipping. A small needle is used to implant the microchip just under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades of dogs and cats. Microchips are implanted in the breast muscles of birds, and horses are microchipped on the left side of the neck.

A microchipped pet that is lost or runs away can be found again. If a veterinary office or shelter finds your pet, they can scan the animal and find the microchip. Once the microchip is scanned and its number found, the shelter can look up your information and contact you to come pick up your pet.
